Tangled Cords is a body of work which seeks to communicate and illustrate the unexplainable bond and shared/ individual experiences between myself and my twin brother Brent. It focuses on these experiences we have had so far in life that have been influenced by or a part of this connection. It centres on myself and Brent as the main subjects and utilizes portraits of us along with archival images, objects, and diary excerpts from myself and my mother. By using different forms of media to make images, I hope to provide a more historically retrospective and intimate perspective on our shared life and relationship. Themes present within the work include: identity, nostalgia, memory, individual/ collective growth, and selfhood.
This project aims to provide insight into aspects of the very unique and not often discussed experience of being a fraternal twin by contemplating individual identity, growth, changes in family dynamics and relationships, and subjective experience. The intention for the imagery is to evoke feelings of sentimentality, contemplation of narrative, recollection, and connection to the viewer’s own experiences of growing up, familial relationships, and becoming an individual.
